TITLE: Performance Tips (Part 1 of 2)

Often, HP-UX systems may seem to run poorly with the reason somewhat obscured by the complexity of a multi-user, multi-process system.  With knowledge about kernel tuning and the performance utilities available on HP-UX, system administrators can often determine the reason for the slow responses and take appropriate steps to fix these areas.  This paper will discuss the many tools and techniques that can improve system performance and the handouts can aid the system administrator in solving performance and planning issues. We will cover issues with databases such as Oracle, focusing in on memory issues and disk and LAN I/O.

TITLE:  HP UX SYS ADMIN TOOL KIT (Part 1 of 2)

HP-UX SysAdmins can take it easy once they know the secrets of   practical scripting.  After all, computers should work for people,   not the other way around.  We'll look at many common tasks and   scripts that can accomplish these tasks.  We'll also look at the   techniques to debug and test the scripts.  And along the way,   develop some basic templates for all scripts to make them more   reliable and easy to troubleshoot.  Handouts will include    working scripts to handle disk space, log files, security tests,   and some script fragments for login control and tracking down   a user's DISPLAY value as well as extensive profile ideas.

TITLE: Using Disk As Tape for Data Archiving, Backup and Management

This presentation will show how to migrate data from MPE to Open Source databases. We will focus on the MySQL database and include strategies to map Image data types to ANSI SQL data types, how to synchronize Image and MySQL data, and how to use MySQL tools to manage the migrated data. Next, we will compare the Open Source databases to commercial databases like ORACLE.

Finally, we will provide the business justification for using Open Source databases for MPE migration including low cost, platform flexibility and future proofing.

TITLE: HP-UX Logs and Lumberjacks

Can't see your system for all the logs?  Come to lumberjack school and we'll show you where they are, what they contain and most important how to trim them.  Some logs always exist, others are filled only after being created and some are optional.  There are both ASCII and binary logs so we'll use different chain saws to hack away at these disk fillers--without losing valuable data.

TITLE: SECURITY (PART 1 of 2)

With electronic information and access becoming easily available, security of this information is a major topic of discussion. This paper will discuss the steps needed to secure HP-UX systems and what side effects these steps might create. An overview of the major security tools such as Bastille, Secure Shell, and the security patch checker will be discussed. Not every system needs a full security implementation and these levels will be identified and explained. A series of security scripts to check and report on vulnerabilities will be presented.
