Juicy Fruit: Lesser known berry varieties source of sweet summer treats
DAVENPORT - best Swanton Berry Farm fruit, say many, grows about nine miles north of the farm Oceanside popular pick your own strawberries - and it is off-limits to the public.
The berry patches here are small, the vines are trellised and bumpy fruit, skin yields bright almost touch it.
They are the berries of the cane - Tayberries, raspberry, boysenberry and olallieberries - and although they are lesser known varieties, they are a favorite among chefs who want a punch of color and flavor in the added dimension shoemakers summer salads.
"The tayberry smoked about it," Bear Boaen, farm and pick your own sales manager for Swanton said after eating one right from the vine. "Delicious does not even really begin to cover it."
Swanton Ranch Coastway launched its U-pick season Olallieberry last week - so, too, does Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville - and about $ 4 a pound, customers can fill their baskets with fruit sweet and tart. But the reserves Swanton bays cane for its other jams, pies and even a lemonade tayberry, sold his farm to Highway 1.
Prevedel Farms offers an assortment of berries grown Watsonville cane farmers market Aptos Cabrillo College on Saturday, from olallieberries Tayberries Boysen and ripe for more jams and jellies for just about every combination of berries.
"I tell customers that we have everything, but strawberries," said Nick Prevedel.
This may not be an exaggeration. The farm grows even marionberries, a rare hybrid device that come in Marin City, Oregon, with a sour taste often described as "earthy."
"Sometimes it's called the queen of blackberries," said Prevedel."This is a very fragile bay. Most of the time now you see it in jams or that kind of stuff. You do not see in stores. "
